Sometimes, there is nothing better to do than watch a good movie. But did you know how much of an impact movies have on our lives? Since movies combine sight and sound, they serve as a powerful outlet to connect with our inner selves, and help guide us along some of life’s greater challenges. If you are an outgoing person, chances are that you like watching positive movies, and vice-versa. Movies are also not expensive to enjoy, and it can be one of many great hobbies to acquire in life. Not only because of the impact on each individual person, but the impact it can have on entire societies. A large amount of the movies produced in the past, and some of them today, can actually provide education on a specific subject (e.g. Dead Poets Society, October Sky, Glory). Movies have changed the way we live, and they will continue to do so. So watch more movies, they keep us going.

Did you know that movies can also help you improve your general well being? The right selection of movies, that is. You know what’s best for you, and you know what movies you like to see. So after you finish watching one, try to reflect on the information you just learned, and apply it for your own benefit. Movies can affect your personal relationships, education, emotional state, health, personal life, the list goes on. One of the greatest gifts a movie can bring, is motivation. Many people lack motivation to do what they want to achieve, and some movies are sure to help those in need. Patch Adams, Seabiscuit, Rocky, Field of Dreams, Charlie Bartlett, and Peaceful Warrior are just a handful of the many thousands of movies that can motivate you to live a more fulfilling life. Sometimes our minds are in desperate need of relaxation, and a good movie will help you unwind. If you have a bad perspective on a problem, watching a good movie can help you grasp a different approach to any problem you are having, and may even provide you with some great means to change the way you live for the better.

Now, movies can help you change your life, and they can do it while you fully immerse yourself in the entertainment. If watching movies in a theater doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, more and more consumers are turning to “home theater” systems; which can get on the expensive side quite quickly. Don’t let that discourage you, as movies can be enjoyed from a tiny 5″ car screen, 15″ laptop/lcd, a giant 60″ HDTV, all the way up to and beyond a 120″ projection screen. As you can see, the hobby of moviegoing has evolved to another level, and anyone who enjoys movies can be a moviegoer. There are many internet resources out there, from movie rental sites like Netflix, Redbox, and Blockbuster; to internet reviews like IMDB, Metacritic, or Rotten Tomatoes. The possibilities in exploring the hobby of movie watching are endless, you just have to know where to look.

On a more negative note, where will the movie industry be in the future? No one can predict the answer, but companies need to start thinking. Movie watchers want to walk away from a great movie, and talk about it afterward with their friends. Lately, the movie industry has been slowing down, and attracting negative attention toward itself. What can be done for improvement? Less money spent on promotion, more money spent on production. This is one of the main reasons why the industry is lagging behind. Take the movie Speed Racer, for instance. The movie was a financial flop; the company spent near 80 million for a marketing campaign, and only grossed 85 million worldwide. Marketing is important, but not nearly as important as the movie itself. To eliminate this problem, movie studios should set a rule of thumb to allocate a certain percentage of the production budget towards other expenses. This could really provide a spark that the industry desperately needs right now.

If we continue to watch movies, the inevitability is that the industry will improve to accommodate moviegoers; just some patience is required. Overall, movies provide us with a breathtaking experience, which we all take for granted. They can pull us out of writers block, and motivate us to eliminate some of the tougher obstacles in our lives. So the next time you feel lazy or unmotivated, watch a movie, it might just be what you need to keep you going.

Here is an abridged version (yet richly enlightening) from one of the articles i wrote concerning this subject matter.

Film exhibition began to thrive during the Colonial era, with Glover Memorial Hall playing host to a range of memorable films viewed by “potential Nigerians”, in August 1903. However, the non-availability of proper records reflecting the title of the debut film exhibited has created a lapse in the precedent stock. Notwithstanding the lacuna, the way had been paved for the exhibition of more foreign films at the Hall and other designated venues.

The emotionally traumatizing “Master – Servant” relationship, evident in the constant assaults, batteries, intimidation, segregation, victimization, carried out by the Colonial masters on the colonized, with darkened clouds of resentment, vengeance, thirst for freedom, giving way to splattering drops of such thoughts, instinctively projected through the colonized intermittent in-subordinate actions, began to spread amongst the blacks. The British knew they had to thread with caution if they still wanted to play “god” in their lives when films such as Tales of Manhattan, Trailer horn, Tarzan series began to stir up a revolution in the hearts of Blacks across the globe.

Aware of the lethal power of insurgency which could be unleashed through the Film medium, the British out of fear for their lives and possible loss of the Queen’s sovereignty took the bull by the horn, and swiftly created a Colonial Film Censors Board (FCB) in 1933 to censor and classify films before they were released for visual consumption by the public. Following the establishment of the board, Films such as “The primitive, primitive man, Dixie, Buffalo Bill, The Keys of the Kingdom, Sleepy Town Girl were tagged ’suitable’ to be watched, while Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Clive of India, The Isle of Forgotten Sins, House of Frankenstein were considered unsuitable for viewing.

The Censor’s body underwent a transformation process into the Federal Board of Film Censors (FBFC) from the aforementioned, and the laws from which the transformed body derived its powers ranged from the 1948 Cinematograph Laws of Nigeria, the Cinematograph Laws of 1963, to the 1963/64 Cinematograph Law and Regulations. The present National Film and Video Censors Board came into existence by virtue of decree, now Act 85 of 1993. The advent of Nigeria’s Independence (1960) and the Republican status (1963), heralded the dawn of a new era in all sectors.

“The Yoruba Travelling Theatre Group” of the 60’s and 70’s can be referred to as the “Fountain Head” of movie productions in Nigeria. The veterans with great Theatrical skills and great performances took their works beyond the stage, and dove into the sea of film productions using the Celluloid format. Notable film makers on the Roll call of Honour during the Celluloid boom era of the 70’s include Ola Balogun, Eddie Ugbomah, late Herbert Ogunde, Adeyemi Afolayan a.k.a Ade Love (father of Kunle Afolayan of the Irapada fame), Ladi Ladebo, Moses Adejumo, Adebayo Salami and Afolabi Adesanya.

The list of documented films produced during the 70’s era and transcending somewhat into the 80’s is simply astonishing and goes to show that the Movie Industry has been around much longer, contrary to the ‘1992 belief syndrome’ most have been injected with. Such works include Kongi Harvest (1971), Alpha (1972), Bull Frog in the Sun (1974), Amadi (1975), Ajani Ogun (1975), Muzik Man (1976), Bisi, Daughter of the River (1977), Ija Ominira (1978), Aiye (1979), Kadara (1980), Jaiyesimi (1980) Efunsetan Aniwura (1981), Cry Freedom (1981),Ija Orogun (1982) Owo L’Agba (1982)

The cost of producing films in that era was financially back breaking, with Nigerians further frustrating the efforts of the filmmakers by opting to watch films of occidental and oriental origin at the Cinemas and Exhibition centres, rather than the locally produced ones. The Cowboy films were exhilarating to watch while the Chinese films paraded amongst others, the Legendary “Bruce Lee” in (Lo Wei’s, The Big Boss (1971), Fist of Fury (1972), Way of the Dragon (1972), Enter the Dragon (1973), The Game of Death released in 1978) who exhibited Martial Arts dexterity, obviously a fighting technique alien, yet fascinating to us at that time.

Indian films in the late 60’s and well into the 70’s paraded renowned names like Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra Singh Deol, Mumtaz, Amitabh Bachchan, Anil kapoor, Hema Malini, and produced hits such as “Bobby”, “Sholay”, “Kabhi Kabhi”, “Dharamveer”, “Amar Akbar Anthony”. Their stars displayed great acting skills against the backdrop of love themes, and ear pleasing songs coupled with synchronized dance steps, produced with sound and special effects, though incomparable with what obtains today bought over the indigenes loyalty for their movies.

Thus, the Movie Founding Fathers began to face the challenges of recouping their investments, which gradually became virtually an impossible task, an anthem they constantly rendered much to the discomfort of potential financers. They counted their losses and licked their wounds sustained in the financial battle with every film they released. The deluge of VCRS in the 80’s created a paradigm shift from the Cine to the VHS format, which made productions easier, faster and cheaper by a milestone in comparison to the former. Cinema houses and other Exhibition centres were finally shut down and the Baton of Cine film making slipped from the hands of the Founding founders as they attempted to hand over the movie baton to the next generation within the stipulated Baton Exchange Zone. The dream of becoming a re-nowned Movie Industry was shattered when the flow of the Film Relay cycle was broken.

Home Videos were produced which served as an alternative to the cinemas, and the name naturally stems from the fact that you could seat within the comfort of your home and watch the movies produced in the VHS format via your VCR. Film Makers capitalized on the gains of the Home Video concept offered, and began producing movies using the Yoruba language as the means of communication. However, the year “1992″ has overtime been widely accepted as the triggering period of Home Video productions, with Ken Nnebue’s “Living in Bondage” said to be the first movie made for commercial purposes using the Igbo/English language.

The movie no doubt struck the “Movie Well”, which invoked a mass exodus of people from other spheres into the art of movie productions, having seen the opportunities that lay in the Gold mine region. Thus, did the Home Video Industry tagged “Nollywood” emerge.

The fact that “Living in Bondage” was ascribed with the honour of being the first movie made for commercial purposes and the one upon which the Home Video revolution was allegedly founded on, culminating into Nollywood, didn’t go unchallenged. Late Alade Aromire before his death, ignited a controversial fire, insisting that his and not Ken’s movie ought to have been conferred with such an honour. When confronted by a reporter on the issue he’d stated that Ken had produced over 40 Yoruba movies, and had started with “Aje N’yami”.

There had been a flourishing movie industry before he came on board, so ken couldn’t have started it.
The confusion stems from the Censors board of the day, whose hands were amputated by the Law it drew its powers from, (1963/64 Cinematograph Law and Regulations). The powers conferred on it to regulate the Industry did not extend to “Home Video”. The present National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) did not exist till 1994. On this raging issue, Late Alade Armoire produced movies such as Ekun, Omije (pts 1-3), Obirin Asiko, Ayo ni o, Adun, Orire which were released to the public between 1985 and 1991.

Ken Nnebue still insists that his movie “Living in Bondage” was the first Home Video movie made for commercial purposes. His stand on the matter is rather shaky, having prior to the production of Living in Bondage sponsored commercial movies in Yoruba language such as Ina Ote, Aje N’iyami and others. Let’s not forget the barrage of Yoruba TV dramas that were mass produced on VHS tapes and sold to the public before 1992. One can’t fail to mention the legendary Eddie Ugbomah’s movie “The Great Attempt” (1989), which would have made history as the 1st Nigerian cine movie in the video tape format to have been censored by the defunct Federal Board of Film Censors (FBFC) based on a “special concession” granted him officially by the permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture at that time.

Unfortunately the strong contents projected in the movie were considered unsuitable for public viewing by the Board, hence the movie was never released. Tunde Alabi -Hundeyin’s “Iyawo Alhaji” is officially on record as the first commercial (direct to exhibition hall) video film to be censored and classified by the NFVCB in 1994 at the National Theatre, (Cinema Hall) Iganmu. Despite the controversial fire raised, the global publicity given to “Living in Bondage” over the years invariably imputed the movie into our memory banks as the flag bearer of the Home Video revolution of all times. People, irrespective of Nationality, race, gender, and tribe are confronted with challenges on a daily basis. Some of these problems are of a global nature, while others are peculiar to various societies. Movies offer people the opportunity of telling their own stories, free from alien interference.

Nigerian movie producers leveraged on this and produced movies projecting our lifestyle, culture, local fashion, burning issues, problems plaguing our society, irrespective of the choking stench of tribalism perceived in all sectors. Movies were made for the viewing pleasure of Nigerians initially, (before the mass exportation craze), with messages to inspire, motivate, reprove, and correct anomalies especially in the Political, Social systems, to eschew violence and all forms of evil.

The tactical use of the English language as the communication tool, marketing strategies and execution through the use of trailers via T.V, Posters (now banned in Lagos State), recorded a boost in sales, and expanded the viewership base beyond the shores of our Nation to countries such as Ghana, Togo, South Africa, Kenya, U.S.A and even the U.K.. Unfortunately, the movies churned out at an alarming rate were technically deficient in key areas considered as germane in the production process.

The popular “shoe string budget” tag has become synonymous with the Industry’s antecedent of making movies on extremely low budgets compared to other movie bodies in other countries, ($10- $15,000 initially), but currently stretches to $25,000, with a microscopic number of producers further stretching the seemingly financial limit to N 7,10,20 Million and more. The movies were and are still shot dominantly between 10-12 days, via Beta cam (now HDV cameras), were produced in the VHS format (now VCD & DVD), replicated in mass and sold by the Marketers who also doubled as Distributors.

Over a thousand movies were being churned out yearly by producers and utterly amazed by the staggering statistical data of movie productions, the International movie spotlight was shone on the Multi Million naira Industry “Nollywood”. The Industry’s net worth as at 2008 stood between an estimated $250 and $300 Million dollars. It is worthy of note that a Global cinema survey, conducted in 2006 by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) and released sometime in May 2009, ranked Nollywood as the second largest producing movie body in the world behind Bollywood and ahead of Hollywood based on the numerical data of the movies produced.

Independent urban action movies are heating up the movie market both domestically and internationally. Hollywood studios like Universal Pictures (American Gangster), Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation (Live Free Or Die Hard), Columbia Pictures (We Own The Night) Warner Bros. Pictures (The Departed) first dominate movie theaters. Then later when you’re in your local Blockbuster to rent a DVD you see dozens of copies of these big budget movies. Some have an entire shelf to themselves. Despite very little to no marketing, smaller budgets, and without the backing of a major studio independent urban action movies are growing in popularity with movie viewers. People that are looking to rent or buy the latest Hollywood action movie online or in stores are taking chances on lesser known urban action movies to see some thing different than the typical formula Hollywood often uses. Some times these independent urban action movies stink. Other times they can be highly entertaining because at the independent level movie makers can take chances with the language, style, and content. They don’t have to hold back because some corporate sponsor or out of producer wants them sell out to make a total commercial piece of crap that follows the urban action formula.

Case in point is the drag down fight fight movie maker Tony Kaye got into with New Line Cinema over his movie American History X. He didn’t even want to be on the credits because the studio tried to water down the story he wanted to tell. Viewers were robbed of seeing the real American History X the way it was meant to be. Thriving outside the same old is a new wave of movie making that’s connecting with urban action movie fans. Codeblack Entertainment has been putting out a steady stream of quality urban action movies including the titles I TRIED and YOUNG CESAR. The movies they put out are slowly carving out a nice piece of the DVD market. They have over 25 movies out. Showing that a independent studio can make it out there. Steven Seagal is best known as a action hero, but he also writes, directs, and produces movies under his movie company Steamroller Productions. He has tapped into his own creativity to put out some really kick kick butt movies. You won’t find them in theaters, but they are heating up the DVD market. URBAN JUSTICE and BLACK DAWN are two of his movies you can check out. The cool thing is Steven Seagal has been able to remain independent while having a deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to distribute his movies. That’s win win for him and movie fans.

You have to have a spark to start a fire. The spark for the booming independent urban action market is the rising movie makers. Some people know the names Spike Lee (Clockers), John Singleton (Four Brothers & Boyz n the Hood) and The Hughes Brothers (Dead Presidents). There talent as movie makers has shined a light on them making them household names. Some new names that are bursting onto the scene in the independent urban action movie arena are Mike O’Dea the filmmaker you love to hate. Hate him or love him, Mike O’Dea cast name actors in his first film with no money. Quadreple threat O’Dea (Writer-Director-Editor-Actor) penned his script TOWNIES in eight months landing him a phone call from Harvey Keitel. TOWNIES is the most realistic Irish Mob movie ever. H.M. Coakley gives viewers HOLLA a urban action movie dressed as a horror movie. It will become a classic in time. A new independent name I discovered is Writer and Director Sid Kali who put out the urban action movie CONSIGNMENT.

I rented it at Blockbuster as was impressed with the entertainment value and story. It was so different from most of the bad drug dealing movies out there. It had awesome dialogue and killer urban action. It was a flat out well made movie. Staying true to independent movie making Sid Kali was not afraid to show a realistic look at the crystal meth world. CONSIGNMENT was more real than BOYZ N THE HOOD. I loved it. It didn’t beat out my all time favorite MENACE II SOCIETY, but it was far better than I expected. Writer and Director Sid Kali has a new movie coming out in February called IN WITH THIEVES that I can’t wait to check out. The beauty of everything is that urban action movie fans have more choices. The quality of independent movies continues to rise giving people more than just the big Hollywood star filled movie option. I love Denzel Washington in AMERICAN GANGSTER, but it’s nice to be able to watch new voices and faces coming onto the movie scene to.

If you look into a student’s room, you’ll most likely see the walls covered with posters. You probably decorated your dorm room with posters (e.g., classic movie posters, posters of your favorite band or singer, etc.) when you were a college student.

There is a huge market for classic movie posters today. These classic movie posters, sold at DVD and record shops, are mainly used by marketing outfits as marketing tools for promoting movies and persuading the movie going public to go to the theaters and watch. However, classic movie posters also serve as memorabilia for movie lovers. After all, classic movie posters are an artwork in themselves. Many of these classic movie posters are actually considered works of art because their designs become the symbols of the films.

Movie posters can convey plenty of information regarding the cast, director, crew and such, but there are movie posters whose focus is more on conveying a powerful visual image. You will notice that older classic movie posters have more words and tag lines and often feature painted images of the lead actors. Other classic movie posters use still photographs that were taken directly from the film.

Many of the images in the classic movie posters are literal. For instance, Gone With The Wind’s classic movie poster had Vivian Leigh in Clarke Gable’s arms. The King Kong classic movie poster has the heroine being carried by King Kong. The Casablanca classic movie poster has its lead stars, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, looking at us, their cheeks against each other.

The more memorable poster images or photographs eventually become the lead stars’ iconic images, and they stay in the moviegoer’s minds. In fact, these poster images are often what launches actors to stardom. For instance, the image of Audrey Hepburn in the classic movie poster for Breakfast At Tiffany’s is one that has endured through the years. Mention her name and the public thinks of her in an evening gown, adorned with jewels. The classic movie posters for The Great Escape captured Steve McQueen doing different motorbike stunts. And James Dean…perhaps his most memorable image is the one that appeared in the Giant’s classic movie poster: Dean posed crucified with his rifle. And who wouldn’t have seen the famous photo of Marilyn Monroe standing over an air vent, trying to hold her dress down? This image of Monroe was used to promote the Bus Stop film. You can find great information on movies and movie reviews at http://www.magiclanternpr.com

The horror genre has its share of memorable images too. The images in the older classic movie posters in this genre mostly conveyed a subtle, quiet menace. For instance, it would be hard not to feel a chill when looking at Norman Bats’ shadowy house iin the classic movie poster for Psycho. Similarly, Jack Nicholson with his head smashed through the door in the movie poster for The Shining is scary. The classic movie poster for The Candyman has a wasp sitting on the edge of an eye.

The Jaws movie poster is one of the classic movie posters that is most reproduced. This classic movie poster has a simple but very powerful image: a shark’s mouth wide open, directly facing us. Another powerful poster image is that of Taxi Driver’s Robert De Niro with his hand at his temple, pointed like a gun. And when it comes to the romance genre, the Titanic movie poster is a true classic. It captures the image of Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet above the Titanic, two people forever in love.

In this day of YouTube, My Space, and Face Book viral web video has become an important marketing tool. The point is not to actually advertise the product you are selling, but to intrigue your audience and tempt them to watch your video, slipping the advertisement in on them without warning. Often such ads are also shown on TV, but with the increasing cost of prime ad time, companies are looking for more cost effective and novel methods to introduce their products or services to you.

A successful viral web video will take on a life of its own, as everyone will want to see it – and when they see it, they revel in sharing it with their friends. It can spread like a virus and have much more impact than what you might expect from traditional advertisements. Viral videos offer greater retention since people talk about it, thus increasing exposure and hopefully your sales. This viral marketing trend is expected to grow in years to come since online video in general plays an increasingly important role in online content delivery.

How to do it:

You must first determine if your brand is right for online video. Is your brand compelling and simple? If so it is perfect for viralweb video . If your brand is a more complex, regulated industry it’s going to require more thought… You must be able to entertain your audience and advertise subtly. It is the entertainment that is the key to the viral propagation. Comedy is often the entertainment style of choice. Content driven only by an advertising objective is at risk of being a flop. If you want people to share your video, it must be entertaining, funny, provocative, outrageous or very interesting and target the interest of your market audience.

If you decide that viral web video is appropriate for your brand, first you need to develop a brief of your idea, and then you must find a creator for your web video. There are several ways to do this; hire your agency, a professional video production company, or contract with a third party that represents a variety of proven creators. Each of these options has its advantages and disadvantages.
Research shows that successful viral web video initiatives increase the awareness of your brand and changes the preference of your target audience. How to create and convey that message and how to use social media to do this successfully is an art. Done correctly, you can pull in the viewers you want to your website, without spending a fortune on ad placement. To get the most out of the video, it should be integrated with the company’s web site to steer viewers to “home base”.

You can’t make a video viral, but your viewers can. Viral web video often has a TV approach: attract the most eyes possible first and promote brand attributes second. The reason these videos work is this, the product isn’t the star…a person or the story is, and people are entertained by it. They watch it, share it with their friends, who share it with their friends; this is how the viral effect is achieved.
Target audiences must be made aware of the company’s existence and must be made to comprehend its relevance to their needs. Audiences must be made aware of how to interact with the company. The process of moving potential customers easily and conveniently from awareness to the sale must be smooth and transparent.

If you desire to set free your acting ability and sharpen your theatrical skills, then this article absolutely will be your goldmine. Acting is equal with glitz, glamour and personality. If you are an inspired person, a keen observer of human mind and perceptive to the events around you then you fit the bill to be an actor. Every possible actor like you needs to chisel his dramatic skills through proper training and experience to various forms of theatre and cinema. If you’ve ever enjoyed a movie, been obsessed on a TV show or been encouraged by a play, you’ve witness the power of acting. This timeless art form of storytelling has come a long way from ancient Greek theater and has ignited many life with its obsession. Drama class is simply astonishing, and while I have a few plays under my belt, I have never closed learning new and breathtaking thing about acting. Ecole De Theatre in Acting is not easy, pleasing, painful, and in my lowly opinion some of the best fun you can have! Confidently you learn at least a little from my instructions. And they are only guidelines, if you’re attracted in exploring and establish a thorough background or information of performing I suggest you search via your favored web browser. In acting you have to set physically up to win. If effective at the local bank is your idea of this, I don’t think it is going to be victorious. A general job is bartender or waiting tables. It’s good money and it’s stretchy. You might also come across further actors and artists as well. an additional angle to look at is a outworker. This is one of the best one’s out there and so usually over looked. I know actors who have their own picture, Landscaping, and Computer Companies. It gives them the chance to take time off from work to do all the things you need to support yourself in acting. Success in drama is very personal. To be honest I don’t know anyone who is pleased with their current condition in acting. Which is good? Acting is an voracious thing. You’ll take a break and desire to get back at it.Take classes from a sound coach. Ask questions concerning his or her background and experience before signing up for any acting lessons. It is also a good obsession to check up on reference that any coach may offer. You must make sure the acting coach is a fine fit for you; because he or she may have the key to helping you ace the next test. Look at yourself in the mirror as you present your monologues. Pay awareness to your facial language, and look for any awkward gestures you may have a practice of making. You will become a superior actor when you can let the words speak for themselves. Many auditions will be videotaped, and you must be comfortable in front of the camera to set out. Watch the tapes carefully for unnecessary movement, head bobbing and eyebrow raise. Perform your test pieces in front of anybody who will be present.
